Great way to get players advancing the ball up the floor. Would use this drill in order to teach transitioning spacing and getting guys in the mind to skip weakside as early in the clock as possible. Along with obtaining early paint touches. Only want layups or catch and shoot 3’s.
3V3 Closeout (Credit: John Leonzo)
Probably my favorite small-sided game I have done. I firmly believe that halfcourt offense is played through a long closeout. If you looked at the podcast notes, hearing Ryan Pannone say that definitely made me feel even stronger about my already developed philosophy. That is where the defense is most vulnerable. This teaches players to attack and make reads off just that. I’d always want the opposite side wing to space back out weakside corner. The middle offensive player has the option to stay at the nail or space back out to the weakside wing. This is a great way to teach any penetration concepts you may have, along with working on your help side defense and closeouts.
Rules
3 Defensive Players will line up along the baseline parallel to the offense at the top of the key. The defense starts with the ball will swing it in a line along the baseline. Upon the swing, you must closeout, first and last passer closeout opposite and middle closeouts out straight away to the top of the key. The final defender will throw the ball parallel to the offensive player. The offense can then swing the ball to the opposite wing as fast as possible to attack the closeout. Live play begins.
