January-March X's and O's Dump: 15 Sets, Concepts, or Actions to Utilize
Coaches, I hope everyone had a great season and is gearing up for a great offseason as well. Be on the lookout for more consistent newsletters and twitter posts with the season ending.
January Twitter Top 5
Illawarra Hawks: Floppy Slip Ghost
Arguably one of my favorite sets I've seen this season this is a great way too attack an aggressive coverage or switch. Given the "no screen, no scheme" rule. It makes it extremely hard to help on this ghost if 2 stay on the ball
Ton of action in this set from Obradorio starts like common horns set with the end look being a veer off a flip and tight pindown on the opp side of the floor. Flows into the ES step up. They have been a must-watch since my guys @SlappinGlass put out some great stuff on them!
NZ Breakers Stagger to Elbow Split
Love this set, but also brings up a topic I'm very adamant about in conceptual O. You must have triggers to get an elbow catch to play off of. I like to think of the elbow catch as the security blanket for a conceptual O when you are stagnant
Illawarra Hawks: Spain P&R
Great special to provide a unique wrinkle if you are running the 3 out Ball Screen Offense
February Twitter Top 5
Creighton: Horns Veer
A set that Creighton went to multiple times against Seton Hall.
Starts as a common Horns Step Up with the ball handler keeping, but Creighton clears out the corner into a single side veer. The veer is always a great option for a shooter vs drop coverage
Creighton: Hi-Lo
Nice way to steal a layup attacking a mismatch. Easy plug in if you have some diamond or box alignments or some floppy sets.
2 great sets from Northern Iowa
1- Typical Horns ball screen the diagonal cut from opp side big creates a HUGE 2v1 numerical advantage off hedge
2- 5 out look into reverse angle screen. The 2 side baseline cut makes this play, turning into an extremely difficult single tag
St. Joe's: ICE vs Side Spain P&R
Creative set to get into a side Spain P&R off the touch action.
Love the concepts to counter coverage
1. Screen the Inside hip, allow your handler to use & get downhill (common)
2. Patiently rejecting frees up backscreen for backside adv.
March Twitter Top 5
I'm always a sucker for a well executed Hi-Lo or Duck in set. Here's a couple from Creighton in their Big East Tournament game versus Marquette. (Creighton will always be on the shortlist of great offensive studies in D1 basketball)
Great Offensive Flow here from NZ Breakers out of 3 out BS motion. Instead of middle step up 5 man goes for the wide pindown off ball being center. Flows right into a grenade DHO off the split. Great stuff. NZ Breakers are an offense I would highly recommend studying.
NZ Breakers: Floppy Choice to Reverse Angle Screen
A very similar concept to the Moncho Fernandez Staple that @SlappinGlass has covered extensively. Great way to manipulate the tag, the ball handler to improve his angle, and get all 5 players moving prior to the screen.
Memphis Hustle: Horns Out Exit
Opening ATO for the Hustle in their last game. Another special that teams can utilize within their 3 out ball screen motion offense.
NZ Breakers running something similar here out of floppy. This still remains as my favorite action to attack aggressive P&R coverages
